Devastating Tornadoes Claim Lives and Cause Widespread Damage Across Multiple States

Severe weather swept through the Heartland and East Coast, killing at least 27 people and leaving a trail of destruction from Kentucky to Virginia. More dangerous storms were expected on Saturday.

Kentucky was the hardest hit, with 18 fatalities reported, followed by Missouri with seven deaths, and two people killed in Virginia after trees fell on their vehicles.

The southeastern Kentucky region, especially Laurel County, experienced the most significant loss, situated about 130 miles southeast of Louisville.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear surveyed the destruction firsthand on Saturday, telling the press, “The devastation is not only visible but deeply felt.”

Having declared a state of emergency before the storms, Beshear remarked this event was one of the worst in his tenure due to the extensive damage and tragic loss of life.

The victims' ages ranged from 25 to 76 years, with at least 12 individuals in their 60s and 70s, according to official state information.

Among the deceased was Maj. Roger Leslie Leatherman, a 39-year veteran of the Laurel County Fire Department, who died in the line of duty.

Entire neighborhoods in London, Kentucky’s county seat, were flattened, leaving residents to sift through wreckage after losing homes in the middle of the night.

Lonnie Nantz, aged 78, recounted how he and his wife clung together in their hallway as their home was destroyed.

Meanwhile, Missouri’s St. Louis faced a fierce EF-3 tornado with wind speeds reaching 140 mph, destroying homes and collapsing buildings.

St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer described the storm as one of the worst the city had seen, confirming five deaths and 38 injuries.

More than 460,000 power outages were reported across affected states, and at least 26 tornadoes touched down from Kentucky to New Jersey on Friday.
